Attack of the Chinese bots from Hell (or China) | [q]2012-11-10 14:21

You might have not noticed it because of the fast comment roasting skills of our moderator Lithium, but a Chinese spammer-bot script just tried to turn the site into a marketplace for Authentic (ye right) Rolex watches.

Upon inspecting the database, I found multiple accounts made from the IP 60.169.78.172, all with emails like chichuhong@163.com. I removed their abillity to comment, however, this brings me to my question:

Should jazzjackrabbit.net have an IP-based filter, that blocks certain ranges from making accounts here?

For example a Bot named HUANG tries to register an account here, however his ip is 60.169.78.*, so he is friendly told to leave.

What are your (the community/userbase) thoughts on this?

Good you handled it, that account was registered ages ago and it still wasn't blocked. Yes, we should definitely have a spam filter.

Yes, I agree. after some thinking+reading, Captcha seems like a better alternative to an IP-filter.

I'll try to implement that this weekend.

EDIT: Captcha implemented. Any bugs can be posted here, or communicated to me over skype, mail or PM. hopefully this blocks our rolex friends emo

Good work!!

Feel free to create an IP-filter too, though we should use it with caution emo
