What makes it so that some players can "know" a battle level by heart?
Which specific learning techniques allow someone playing a battle game, duel or free-for-all (or team battle)...
To navigate the level/map efficiently, taking the fastest routes to carrots and able to wait for powerups and ammo clusters in relative safety?
...Is it as simple as memorizing the locations of carrots and powerups, memorizing the layout and all of its floors, platforms and zones?
I lost in battle duels over and over. Although maybe my opponents were just good at the game and I`m not, I guess that my only chance is:
To learn a bunch of different levels, so that I eventually have an advantage in some levels. They seemed like either they already "know" a lot of battle levels very well,
OR, they`re just able to pick up new levels really quickly.
That ability to learn new maps quickly seems like something that only the really experienced players have.

Its mostly about playing, playing and playing more. The more you play the better you get, also at recognizing situations. After a while you will get better at learning maps faster and taking note of the most important aspects of a level.
Its the same for CTF.
