Misc articles: Multiplayer tutorial

Here you will find useful information on how to play JJ2 online multiplayer!

General information

In JJ2+ you can use many commands in the game, which will lead to a certain change in the server/game. Here is the full list of commands to use in JJ2+.

In a server you can press F9 to see the current player list of the server:

f9

Here is a list of the most relevant JJ2 weapons and helpful information about them.

Tips for control setup

You can select "Run" to your left and right direction keys to run fast automatically. This way you can use one more finger for changing weapons (1-9), permanently.

run key

You can place the keys for "Fire", "Jump", "Up", "Down", "Left" and "Right" as close as possible below the weapon keys 1-9. This way, you should be able to select the weapons 1-9 faster than if you place these keys at the bottom of the keyboard or at the arrows. This way you can select weapons with the fingers both hands.

keyboard

(The selected keys in this picture are just an example to illustrate placing the keys close to the weapon keys for faster weapon change. You should select your keys in a way that feels comfortable for you.)

The "weaponbind mutator" allows you to place weapons on other keys than 1-9. You use it by writing !bind *weapon number* *new key* IN the jj2 online servers.

For example: !bind 9 A --> gun9 gets placed on "A". !bind 9 3 --> gun9 gets placed on "3"

  • wp

IMPORTANT: Weaponbinds only work in servers, which run the weapon bind mutator.

Tips for moving and jumping

Usually it's best to move fast through the map, without bumping into objects unnecessarily. Here are examples of slow/inefficient vs. fast/efficient moves:

Sometimes it's better to play/move carefully to avoid running into enemy bullets:

  • When you have the flag  in CTF and intend to stay safe, you can "camp" in safe areas of the map.
  • Sometimes it's good to let your long range weapons "clear" your path before u move forward.
  • shoot and use the double jump backwards to stay "safe" and to dodge incoming bullets quickly.
  • In many situations it's good to get the "higher ground" against your opponent, so he can't hit you, but you can hit him with the right weapons.

Tips for managing and using your weapons

  • collect the strong powerups of the weapons, because they cause more damage to the opponent.
  • Powerups, carrots and all other items in the map respawn after a certain number of seconds, after they were taken/collected. Try to take useful powerups again when they respawn, so your opponent can't get them and be more dangerous. Try to take the carrots again when they respawn, to prevent your opponent from regaining health.
  • If you have the time in the match, collect different kinds of weapons, to be able to hit opponents in every possible location and situation and to defend yourself against approaching opponents. Especially collect the following weapons:
    • horizontal long range weapon for hitting opponents who are far away (seeker/rf/fireball).
    • vertical/diagonal weapon that can hit opponents who are below you (seeker/bouncer).
    • weapons which pass through walls, to hit opponents and collect powerups behind walls (bouncer/gun9).
    • seeker bullets (gun4), because it's the most "useful" weapon in many situations.
    • RF bullets (gun5), for performing RF climb on walls and for moving faster through the map with rf-boosts:
  • in some maps there are unlimited ammo-pickups for bouncer, rf or toaster. when you can't get the powerup of the same weapon, collect 50 bullets from these pickups or refill your bouncer/rf/toaster-powerup here, before you run out of ammo.
    • unlimited
  • Use the optimal weapon depending on your location or situation. For example:
    • in most situations, rather use a long range weapon (seeker/rf/fireball) in long horizontal space rather than a weapon with shorter range (blaster/toaster)
    • many times it's good to use bouncer when your opponent is below you. you can also jump up to get the higher ground to shoot bouncers down on your enemy.
    • change the weapon, depending on the location you are in. for example use a long range weapon in while crossing long horizontal space and switch to a vertical/diagonal weapon when opponents could appear in the space below you:

--> This means you need to be able to change your weapon very quickly, if you want to play as good as possible.

  • usually, keep your last bullet of a strong powerup, change your weapon and collect new ammo-pickups to refill your strong powerup weapon.
    • last bullet
  • use your weapon bullets, wisely. Don't shoot/waste too many bullets when it's unnecessary, but don't shoot too few bullets when you could encounter opponents any moment.

How to play Capture The Flag (CTF)

The player who has the flag is the "flagholder". (The flagholder of your opponent team is also called "enemy".) The player without the flag is the "fighter".

players

To explain the basic CTF strategy, we assume you are on the blue team in a 2vs2 match.

In order to score a point in CTF as blue team, you need to bring the red flag to the blue base, when the blue flag is currently standing in the blue base.

base

1. One player of your team needs to run to the red base to capture the red flag. In the meantime the red team will capture the blue flag from blue base.

2. After capturing, the primary task of your flagholder is to survive and keep the red flag. The primary task of your fighter is to hunt and hit the flagholder (enemy) of the red team.

3. When the enemy got hit and lost health and your fighter can kill him soon, your flagholder should go to blue base.

4. Now your fighter has to kill the flagholder of the red team, so the blue flag returns to the blue base automatically. That's the moment when your flagholder has to touch the blue base and will score a point!

When your flagholder got hit and lost health/hearts, your fighter has to go to red base to be ready to recpature the flag, in case your flagholder gets killed and loses the red flag. Otherwise the red team will make a score!

During the game also collect different weapons to kill opponents better.

CTF codes

CTF codes are abbreviations of certain information, which is shared among teammates during a CTF match by using teamchat (press shift+T to teamchat). The purpose of these information is to inform your teammates about events and situations/circumstances of the match (for example that you managed to hit the flagholder of the opponent team).

Here are the most important CTF codes and their meaning:

  • “1”, “2” or “3”= telling your teammates your current health.health
  • h = “health”. say “h” to ask the health of your flagholder. When he has 1h or 2h you need to go to enemy base to be ready to recapture the flag, if your flagholder dies.
  • e = “enemy” = flagholder of the opponent team
  • f = “fighter” = opponent player(s) without flag.
  • a/d/r = pre-match question to decide the task of the teammembers for the BEGINNING of the match:
  • The player who says “a” goes to “attack” the enemy base to capture the flag.
  • The player who says “r” goes “ready” to capture the flag, if the attacker dies before or shortly after capturing the flag.
  • The player who says “d” “defends” the own base/flag against approaching opponents who want to capture your flag.
  • a = “attack”. During the match, say “a” to order your teammates to go to enemy base to capture the flag or to be ready to recapture it.
  • “r1”, “r2” or “r3” = “ready”. When your flagholder could die soon because he is 1h or 2h, and you are “ready” to recapture the flag in enemy base, say r+your health.
  • “s1”, “s2” or “s3” = “score”. When you have the flag and are in your own base, ready to make a score, say s+your health: “s1”, “s2” or “s3”
  • e1 = when you hit the enemy (=opponent with flag) with a powerup (=2h damage), tell your teammates that he has only 1h left.
  • e2 = when you know the enemy is 3h and you hit him with a non-powerup weapon (=1h damage), tell your teammates that he has only 2h left.
  • e3 = when you see enemy taking a “full carrot” (=2h recovery carrot), tell your teammates that he has 3h again.
  • es = “enemy scores”. Say “es” when the enemy flagholder is ready to score in his own base, so your own flagholder knows he must survive or else the opponents will score.
  • dd = “don’t die”. You can say „dd“ when your flagholder is 1h or 2h and you are not “r” yet.
  • c = “carrot”. Say “c” when you see the carrot is there, so your teammates know it’s there, too.
  • nc = ”no carrot”. Say “nc” when you saw that the carrot was just taken by any player or yourself.

There are a few more CTF codes, which are not listed here. If your teammates use them in a match and you don’t know their meaning, ask your teammates and they will explain.
